Did you know that only one woman ever filled the title role of Chic Young’s incredibly popular Blondie on the silver screen? That was the great Penny Singleton.

The Blondie series, which had 28 films from 1938 to 1950, was based on Young’s cartoon strip, created in 1930, about the misadventures of a small town family. Arthur Lake played Blondie’s husband, Dagwood Bumstead, and was also the only one ever to fill his role on the big screen.

After ending her time as Blondie, Singleton (whose real name was Dorothy McNulty) went on to voice Jane Jetson in the popular Hanna-Barbera animated series, The Jetsons.

She was also an active member of the American Guild of Variety Artists, a performer’s labor union. As union vice president in the 1960s, she led a Radio City Music Hall Rockettes strike.

Singleton passed away in 2003, but will always be remembered for two of pop culture’s most iconic characters.
