The 1960s were a tenuous time for Dell Comics. In 1962, the publisher was seeking out an all-ages hit (preferably an original one, not based on an animated series), so Bill Woggon’s presented Millie. A girlish, long-lashed green and yellow dragon whose friendliness dominated her storylines, Millie lived in a hamlet called Midway and shared her home with a ghost named Goodie who haunts her home.

Her nemeses (or the closest thing to them she had) were Greedly Gotrocks, town half-owner and developer, and Greedly’s assistant, Milton Meek.

Millie made friends with the children in town – a good move, if Woggons and Dell wanted small children to buy and read the comic – by being exceeding polite and unabrasive, despite her size and potentially ominous appearance.

Though the series only lasted for three comics, Millie didn't fade from view before proving that she wasn’t a pushover. She was shown angry in one storyline and, when angry, she did what most would expect a dragon to do: she spouted fire.

All in all, though, Millie has gone down in history as one of comics’ most lovable monsters. She’s probably right up there with Casper, though not nearly as well known.
