Quantcast

Abra Kadabra, aka Citizen Abra, hails from the 64th century where science is so advanced that stage magic is no longer considered an impressive form of entertainment. He was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, debuting in The Flash #128 (May 1962). Wanting to pursue a career in magic, he uses a time machine to go back to a period when his illusions might still impress audiences.

If that wasn’t taking things too far, Abra Kadabra uses a device that hypnotizes the audience to make them clap when he wants. Since audiences weren’t giving him enough adulation, he decided to insert himself in important events. He became an enemy/nuisance of the Flash, and during one comical encounter Abra Kadabra used his device to make Flash clap to allow him to escape.

When Abra Kadabra was finally caught and sent to jail, he made a ray out of pots and pans that he used to hypnotize the governor and gain his freedom. He created a magical puppet show, temporarily turning the Flash into a puppet and used him in the show.

Not all of his comic adventures have been silly. During the Underworld Unleashed storyline he sought to gain real magical powers by tricking five Rogues into selling their souls to Neron. Later he kidnapped Linda Park during her wedding to Wally West and erased her from history, but he was stopped by Wally’s alternate version, Walter West.

Since then, he’s been a member of the Secret Society of Super Villains, worked with the Rogues, and periodically pops up to be a nuisance.
