Liz Sherman has pyrokinetic abilities that caused tragedy during her childhood, which she has honed to use as a member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Created by Mike Mignola in Hellboy: Seed of Destruction (March-June 1994), Liz was living a normal life until her pyrokinetic powers manifested when she was 10 years old.

Since she was raised Catholic, Liz thought the new ability was a result of her sins and she tried to control the power through prayer and her own force of will. Unfortunately, she lost control when she was 11, and she accidentally killed her parents, brother, and dog when she destroyed a city block.

Liz bounced around to extended family members before the B.P.R.D. adopted her. Once she learned how to control her powers, Liz became an agent for the B.P.R.D., often partnering with Hellboy and Abe Sapien. Though she was moving on with her life, Liz remained angry and bitter over what she had accidentally done as a child.

During the Wake the Devil storyline, Liz led a group to the Ruins of a Czege Castle to find Vladimir Giurescu’s body. On the mission, her team found a homunculus named Roger and unintentionally transferred her pyrokinetic power to him. Left in a coma, Liz was rescued by Hellboy, who found Roger and her powers were restored.

Recognizing the need to gain better control over her abilities, Liz sought out an order of monks in the Ural Mountains. As she had hoped, the monks taught her how to fully control her power over fire, which now included the ability to produce small flames to large explosions, and the power to manipulate fire into whatever shape she needs. With her newly developed skills she was able to burn the Katha-Hem entity and other dangerous enemies.
