Alana is the heroine of the fantasy/space opera Saga, created by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. She was a soldier who fell in love with a man from her enemy’s military, and then went on the run to protect her daughter, Hazel, from the intergalactic war.
She was introduced in Saga #1 as a young woman who joined the military to escape her abusive father. Alana became a Private First Class for the Landfall Coalition, but was discharged from service when she hesitated to carry out an order that would kill innocent people. In punishment, she was sent to prison where she spent much of her time reading. Soon after, she was joined in prison by Marko, a soldier from her enemy’s forces.
Initially, they did not get along, but soon the pair connected over their appreciation for literature. Once they fell in love, Alana freed herself and Marko, they secretly got married, and had the first child from their two species that survived for more than a few weeks. When Hazel was born, they were relentlessly pursued by the Landfall Coalition.
While they were fleeing to a rocket ship that would take them away from Cleave, Marko was attacked by the Stalk. In order to save him, she sought the help of a local Horrors named Izabel who offered to save him if she could be bonded with Hazel.
As Marko was being healed, they were set upon by Landfall Coalition forces and Alana was shot. Marko went crazy with rage as he tried to save his family, and Alana had to take drastic measures to calm. She used her weapon to stun him and once he had returned to his senses, they finally boarded a ship to get away from their pursuers.
