The 2020 lineup of films is on the horizon, so we’re taking the time to look at what’s coming out and when – and why we’re excited about them.
Birds of Prey – February 7, 2020
Margot Robbie’s take on Harley Quinn was a standout moment in 2016’s Suicide Squad. So to have her joining forces with Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Birds of Prey sounds like a legitimately fun time. With Ewan McGregor taking on the role of Black Mask, it’s shaping up to be an affair that has some solid acting laying the foundation for a wacky yet violent trip back into the DC universe.
Sonic the Hedgehog – February 14, 2020
When the first trailer for this film released in mid-2019, it was instantly divisive for the choices that were made in designing the title character for live-action. But after Sonic was redesigned and a new trailer released, the loyal fanbase signed off on this project. Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is joined by James Marsden and Jim Carrey for his first feature-length film, and now that the blue blur looks more accurate, we’re putting this on our to-watch list.
Bloodshot – February 21, 2020
It’s time for the Valiant Comics vigilante to have his time on screen. Played by Vin Diesel, the title character of Bloodshot will introduce viewers to the Valiant universe in a stylish take on science fiction with plenty of action. There’s less public awareness of Bloodshot when compared to the likes of the MCU or DC films, but this might be the kind of film that helps put Valiant’s remarkable lineup of characters on the map.
Onward – March 6, 2020
Tom Holland and Chris Pratt will star in Pixar’s latest animated outing, which will be an adventure set in a contemporary setting that just so happens to be filled with fantasy creatures. The two elf brothers will take off on a road trip in hopes of discovering a way to bring their late father back to life. Pixar’s quality is well-renowned, so this is bound to be a worthy watch in 2020.
Mulan – March 27, 2020
The latest in Disney’s trend of live-action remakes of their classic animated films will star Liu Yifei as the legendary warrior Mulan; she’ll be joined by Donnie Yen, Gong Li, and Jet Li, among others. Though it doesn’t feature a wise-cracking dragon sidekick, nor is it set to be a musical like the animated feature, this new take on Mulan clearly includes plenty of the action and drama while being faithful to the original source material.
The New Mutants – April 3, 2020
This film has been in the can for nearly two years now, and it’s finally set to see a theatrical release this coming April. The New Mutants features some of today’s best young actors, including Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, and others, and the film looks to be a more horror-forward look at the lives of these mutants.
No Time To Die – April 8, 2020
Cary Fukunaga directs the 25th outing for 007, with Daniel Craig returning to the role of James Bond for what is presumably his final outing in the suit. With the Oscar-winning Rami Malek in the antagonist’s shoes and Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) joining as a greener secret agent – plus Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear and Ben Whishaw all returning – the action set for this story is bound to be compelling.
Black Widow – May 1, 2020
The first entry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 will be this prequel, focusing on Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff. Though story details are still somewhat sparse, we do know that she’ll be facing off against the Taskmaster in a plot that looks to be just as much about openly kicking butt as it is about trying to do so discreetly. With this being the character’s assumed final sendoff, it’s likely to be a hot ticket even for the more casual Marvel fans.
Wonder Woman 1984 – June 5, 2020
Complete with a synthwave soundtrack and even a trip to the mall, the trailer for this DC sequel just absolutely screamed 1980s. Wonder Woman 1984 is set to take place at the height of the Cold War, and will pit Diana Prince (played once again by Gal Gadot) against the Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) – and also features the return of the thought-dead Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). We loved the first Wonder Woman film and this already looks to be of a similar quality, so be sure to save some popcorn for us.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife – July 10, 2020
Rather than a reboot like the 2016 entry was, this will be a sequel to the original two films in the Ghostbusters franchise. Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace star as a brother and sister who discover a connection that their family has to the original Ghostbusters after inheriting a decrepit old farmhouse. They’re joined by Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd in the cast, and much of the cast of the original films will also be returning in some capacity.
We’re also excited for plenty more on the way that we just don’t have trailers for yet, like Morbius, Bill and Ted Face the Music, Monster Hunter, Eternals, Halloween Kills and more. It’s safe to say, if you can’t reach us – we’ll be at the movies.
