What would happen if Back to the Future was a slasher movie? That’s the premise in Amazon Prime’s new horror-comedy, Totally Killer.

The streamer released a red band trailer, introducing Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Jamie Hughes, a teenager who comes face to face with the Sweet Sixteen Killer – a notorious murderer that killed several teenagers 35 years ago. When the killer attacks Jamie, she is somehow transported back in time to 1987, right before the murders. The 21st century teen tries to stop the killer while also navigating the foreign territory of the 1980s.

Totally Killer is the latest in a wave of horror-comedies that take the premise of a popular comedy film and turn it into a slasher. In 2017, Happy Death Day was a Groundhog Day homage that had a young woman reliving the day of her murder over and over again as she tries to solve it. In 2020, Freaky took on Freaky Friday with a notorious killer switching bodies with a teenage girl.

The movie is directed by Fresh Off the Boat and Young Rock executive producer Nahnatchka Khan. It also stars Randall Park, Julie Bowen, Lochlyn Munro, Olivia Holt, Charlie Gillespie, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson, and Liana Liberato.

Totally Killer arrives on Prime Video on October 6, 2023. The red band trailer is available on YouTube.
