In his quaint little village, Ansel stands out. He wears a suit and tie – a stark contrast to the tunics and robes that most of the other villagers wear – and seeks knowledge wherever he can find it. When it comes time for him to announce what his quest will be to get him out of the village, he claims he’s going to find the Folklords, who he believes can help him find his way to another world. Ansel sees visions of this world, where everyone wears suits and there are buildings as tall as mountains. But the village’s force known as the Librarians seek to keep Ansel (and everyone else) from uncovering who the Folklords really are.
I love it when a story comes along that twists around fantasy tropes in a new way, and Folklords seems to be doing exactly that. To have a young kid who lives in a fantastical world of trolls and gnomes and have him long for the visions he sees of mundane contemporary life – airplanes, skyscrapers, wristwatches – it’s pretty cool. This is set to be a limited series and I look forward to seeing how it all plays out.
