In a move to stop a second war between the Browncoats and the Alliance, Malcolm Reynolds turned himself into the Alliance. But rather than being arrested, Mal is given a partner – Boss Moon – and sent to a sector where he’ll become Sheriff Reynolds.

Mal as a lawman is a pretty funny concept, until one considers his disdain for those in power who abuse it and how his new position affords him the opportunity to challenge those individuals. Once on the job, Mal immediately sees how the local mayor is corrupt and how the citizens seem destitute because of the larger corporations like Blue Sun.

This issue begins a new arc for Firefly and it’s off to a great start. Greg Pak has done a terrific job on this title by pulling the crew of Serenity into larger situations to confront the problems of their world. It’s done in a way that is thought provoking, but is certainly not short on the entertainment value with the rebellious elements and attitude for which Firefly is known.
