Step several years into the future where New York City is ruled by a violent tyrant and only one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is still alive. This single Turtle, hardened by what he has endured, is making it his mission to find justice for the family and friends he has lost.

Co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird have returned to their beloved creation: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The pair were joined by Tom Waltz to develop the story for The Last Ronin, with Waltz and Eastman writing the script.

The five-issue miniseries is set in the future, but it reads like a vintage TMNT book with hardnosed grit and violence, showing how tough the Turtles are when facing such a dangerous opponent. The story is structured to present bits of bombshell type news, leading up to the reveal of which Turtle has survived all these years alone.

Unsurprisingly, it’s an engaging start and great to see Eastman and Laird back on a Turtles story.
