Item Description
Pair of Marvel artboards feature the complete original art for cover to "Despicable Deadpool" #299, published by Marvel April 2018. Art is by Mike Hawthorne, noted for his work on "Deadpool, Queen & Country, Conan: Road Of Kings" and other titles. He has been nominated for both Harvey and Eisner awards. This was the second to last issue from Hawthorne's six-year run. Cover art depicts Deadpool standing w/his arms spread wide, the lower half of his face exposed to show a smile on his scarred visage as a bevy of deadly weapons hurtle towards him. Some of note include - Elektra's sai, Hawkeye's arrows, Daredevil's billyclub, Green Goblin/Hobgoblin pumpkin bombs, Bullseye's playing cards, Boomerang's boomerang; even some of the iconic weapons from the Clue board game make an appearance (rope, wrench, candlestick, lead pipe, dagger). First, 11x17.25" artboard has blue/lead pencil preliminary original art. Top margin has penciled "Deadpool" title as well as issue number, "Cover" and Hawthorne's name in pencil. Second, 11x17" artboard has Hawthorne's final inked artwork, which was inked over print of preliminary pencils and used to produce the cover. Top margin bears same written information, which has been written again above in ink. Subtle differences between this and pencil art include more weapons were added for the final inked version (also in a slightly different arrangement) and that Deadpool's belt buckle appears to be winking. Hawthorne has signed his name at lower right of each, adding "2017" date to inked art. Both artboards remain clean and art is Exc. Wonderful art from the artist who has illustrated more Deadpool pages than any other comic artist.
