Margaret Whitton, the actress and producer who starred as the team owner in 1989’s Major League, died on Sunday, December 4, 2016. She passed away in Palm Beach, Florida after a battle with cancer. Steven Tabakin, her producing partner, confirmed her passing. She was 67 years old.

In Major League, Whitton was the primary antagonist who schemed to move the Cleveland Indians to Florida. In the cast dominated by macho men she made the role of Rachel Phelps stand out as a comedic villain and woman you love to hate.

Whitton was born on November 30, 1949 in Philadelphia, PA. Her first notable acting appearance was on stage, as Peggy Whitton. She made her Broadway debut in 1982’s Steaming.

In the 1980s she was in 9 1/2 Weeks, The Secret of My Success, and Little Monsters, plus several episodes of Hometown and A Fine Romance. In the early ’90s she was in Good & Evil, Big Girls Don’t Cry…They Get Even, Cutters, and Trial by Jury.

She produced the documentaries Been Rich All My Life and Casting By and in 2011 she produced and directed A Bird of the Air.
