In May 2016, the DC Universe: Rebirth one shot – by Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Phil Jimenez, Ethan Van Sciver and Gary Frank – ended in a major revelation. Apparently, lurking behind-the-scenes of the DC Universe were Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen characters, particularly Dr. Manhattan. A shocking twist, given this is the first time a member of the 1986-1987 miniseries had any altercation with DC's various characters.

Part of this revelation involved the caped crusader himself. While in the Batcave, Batman came across the Comedian's blood-stained smiley face button – an iconic piece of Watchmen imagery. How exactly the button got there has remained a thought-provoking mystery. One that is set to be explored in April 2017 in a new four-issue crossover between the Batman and The Flash ongoing series.

“The Button,” will take place in issues #21 and #22 of Tom King and Jason Fabok's Batman, as well as Joshua Williamson and Howard Porter's The Flash. Each issue will include both a lenticular cover and a regular cover, each drawn by Fabok. The lenticular covers will retail for $3.99, while the regular covers remain at the standard Rebirth price of $2.99.

Although the Watchmen reveal was one of the biggest developments within the Rebirth line, follow-ups have been limited to mere teases. During 2016's Comic-Con in San Diego, DC co-publisher Dan DiDio remarked that Rebirth was the beginning of a two-year plan.

“When we went out and we set up Rebirth, we set up a two-year story. A lot of the questions that are out there will be answered during that two-year plan. The goal is not to answer every question in the beginning, but to roll things out and continue to excite people all the way through. You’ll see a lot of twists and turns coming out over the next year or so that will get you to, hopefully, where you want to be,” shared DiDio.

The first part of “The Button” is scheduled for release on April 19, 2017.
