Fox has officially announced that the next X-Men film will be titled X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Rumors that the franchise would pick-up The Dark Phoenix Saga have been circulating for a while.

The storyline by Chris Claremont and John Byrne first appeared in 1980. It depicted Jean Grey being driven crazy by the power of the Phoenix Force, destroying a planet, and sacrificing herself to save the universe.

The Dark Phoenix story served as part of the larger plot in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, though it was not fully realized.

Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), who was introduced as Jean Grey in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, is set to reprise the role. The expected release date for Dark Phoenix will be 2018, along with Deadpool 2 and The New Mutants.
