Robert Crumb’s Fritz the Cat original cover art for the 1969 Ballantine collection of Fritz stories sold for $717,000 on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Heritage Auctions. According to the firm, this is the highest price ever publicly paid for a piece of original art from an American comic book.

It sold during the first evening of Heritage’s high-end comics and comic art sale. The Platinum night session also included The Avengers #1 CGC 9.4, Suspense Comics #3 CBCS 9.2, and Frank Frazetta’s Battlestar Galactica original painting titled In Pharaoh’s Tomb.

The auction is part of a three-day event from Thursday through Saturday. The 1,300 lots include original Underground Comix art, original cover art, and scarce, key books spanning every genre.
