Comic artist Rich Buckler died on Friday, May 19, 2017, after a long fight with cancer. Buckler drew almost every major character at Marvel and DC. He is celebrated for his art and penciling on Fantastic Four in the 1970s and for co-creating Deathlok in Astonishing Tales #25.

Born in Detroit on February 6, 1949, Buckler’s comic book work began when he was a teenager in King Features’ Flash Gordon #10. At DC he drew backup stories in Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane #117-121.

For years he worked on both DC and Marvel comics before establishing a two-year run on Fantastic Four. Around this time, he also co-created Deathlok with Doug Moench. In 1981, he and Roy Thomas created All-Star Squadron, the World War II era team, for Justice League of America.

In the ’80s he worked for Archie, reviving the Red Circle Comics line. He returned to Marvel to draw “The Death of Jean DeWolff” story in The Spectacular Spider-Man. He was editor for Solson Publications during their short run. He also wrote two books: How to Become a Comic Book Artist and How to Draw Superheroes.
