Canadian TV actor Donnelly Rhodes died of cancer on Monday, January 8, 2018. He was 80 years old.
Rhodes played the unlucky escaped convict Dutch Leitner on Soap from ’78 to ’81 and brusque Doc Cottle on the reimagined Battlestar Galactica from ’04 to ’09. He starred on Canadian shows as Dr. Grant Roberts on Danger Bay from ’85 to ’90 and as Detective Leo Shannon on Da Vinci’s Inquest from ’98 to ’05.
Born on December 4, 1937 in Winnipeg, Rhodes graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada. With 161 TV and film credits to his name, he started out with very early roles as guest spots on Maverick, Cheyenne, and Bonanza. He had multi-episode arcs on Double Trouble, The Heights, and Street Legal, and was in films like Gunfight in Abilene, Glory Days, Urban Safari, Snow Dogs, and TRON: Legacy.
Over the course of 50 years, Rhodes guest starred on some of the most popular shows like Mister Ed, The Wild Wild West, Mission: Impossible, Wonder Woman, Cheers, Magnum, P.I., The Golden Girls, The X-Files, Smallville, Supernatural, and his final roles were in The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
