Character actor Richard Venture, known for his work in such Academy Award-nominated films as All the President’s Men, Missing, and Scent of a Woman, has passed away at the age of 94. Venture appeared in more than 80 different films over the course of his career in addition to having several television guest roles.

Venture was born Richard Venturella on November 11, 1923, in New Jersey. During World War II he enlisted in the Navy and served aboard three different aircraft carriers. After returning to the U.S., he made his Broadway debut in Dinosaur Wharf, in 1951. He later joined both the Arena Stage Company in Washington, DC, and the Long Wharf theater company in New Haven, Connecticut.

He appeared in a number of films from the ’70s through the ’90s, usually being cast as authoritarian figures. Venture’s filmography included Dark Intruder, Airport ’77, The Hunter, Touch and Go, Heartbreak Ridge, Courage Under Fire, and Red Corner. His last film role was 2001’s Series 7: The Contenders. On television, he appeared in Seinfeld as the father of Jerry’s girlfriend on the episode “The Letter.” Venture also had recurring roles in other shows such as The Boys, Falcon Crest, and Law and Order.

After ending his acting career in the early 2000s, Venture retired to Old Lyme, Connecticut. He is survived by his four children and nine grandchildren.
