Former GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines has passed away at the age of 53 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Raines was the CEO of the video gaming retail chain in 2010-2017, and had previously worked with the company since 2008, when he had joined GameStop as their chief operating officer.

During his tenure with GameStop, Raines oversaw the company as it diversified its product lineup beyond just contemporary games and consoles. The company expanded to include trade-ins on phones and other mobile devices, as well as stocked its shelves with statues, figures, and other collectibles, and retro video games as well. Raines departed GameStop in November 2017 due to health issues; he had previously been treated for a brain tumor in 2014.

“We are profoundly sad to learn of the passing of our friend and former chief executive officer, J. Paul Raines,” Mike Mauler, GameStop CEO, said in a statement. “His spirit is woven into the fabric of our company and the entire GameStop family mourns this loss. Paul was a brilliant man and remarkable visionary, as well as a compassionate, caring, and inspirational community leader who was beloved by many. Paul cared deeply about his work and his GameStop family, but his greatest love was for his family. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to them and all those whose lives and hearts Paul touched during his journey.”
