Legendary has announced a collaboration with Sunrise that will be bringing legendary anime series Mobile Suit Gundam to the silver screen in live-action format. The announcement, made at Anime Expo 2018, didn’t reveal many details beyond the fact that the film is indeed happening, but the press release did confirm that the film will be taking place in the “Universal Century” timeline – the main timeline for the franchise.

“The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth,” the release reads. “Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted.”

The original Mobile Suit Gundam series (also known within the fandom as Gundam 0079) debuted in April 1979 and followed the exploits of the young pilot Amuro Ray. Amuro ends up in the cockpit of the formidable mecha known as the RX-78-2 Gundam as the Earth Federation must defend themselves from the Principality of Zeon over the course of the One Year War.

The “Universal Century” timeline has since included many other series and films, such as Zeta Gundam, The 08th MS Team, and Char’s Counterattack, though the Gundam franchise also contains dozens of entries outside of that timeline, such as Gundam Wing, G Gundam, Gundam 00, and Build Fighters.
