With the success of recent horror films like It and the positive buzz for the Halloween reboot, more horror franchises are looking to capitalize on the opportunities. Enter Chucky.

The 1988 horror movie Child’s Play saw a serial killer transfer his consciousness into a toddler sized doll to keep from dying. Of course, the doll is purchased and then wreaks havoc on his new owner and associates.

Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive first look at the new version of Chucky. Since the film is a remake of the first movie, Chucky has ditched the scars he’s had since Bride of Chucky. He’s still sporting the red hair, blue eyes, and freckles of his innocent looking visage, along with the striped sweater and overalls. Couple that with the very big knife blocking a portion of his face, and viewers get a very unsettling image.

Chucky was created by Don Mancini, who wrote or cowrote all seven films in the original series (including resurgence films in 2013 and 2017). Prior to the remake, Brad Dourif has voiced the killer doll in each one. It has not been announced if he’ll reprise the role.

The new Child’s Play will be directed by Lars Klevberg (Polaroid), who said that he’ll use practical doll and visual effects for the new film. He also teased that the story could differ from the original.

Aubrey Plaza will star as Karen Barclay, Gabriel Bateman (Lights Out) will play Andy Barclay, and Brian Tyree Henry will play Detective Mike Norris. It is being produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg (It) with Aaron Schmidt executive producing.
