Following two seasons on Netflix, Marvel’s Iron Fist series has been given the axe. Despite what has been considered a much-improved second season over the first, Iron Fist has officially been cancelled, marking the first such cancellation for any of Marvel’s series on the streaming service.

“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Netflix and Disney told Deadline in a joint statement. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew, and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”

In accordance with the last sentence of that statement, it’s expected that Danny Rand/Iron Fist – portrayed by Finn Jones in the Netflix series – will continue to appear in other Marvel Netflix shows such as Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, or Defenders.

Fan response to the cancellation was swift, with a Change.org petition started to bring the show back for a third season. As of this article’s publication, the petition has more than 12,000 signatures. “There is so much more potential and stories to be told and [it’s] not great fanservice to end the last season on a cliffhanger,” the petition reads. There has been no official response from Netflix or from Disney regarding this fan petition as of yet.
