Prodigious comic writer and editor Dennis O’Neil will be honored by the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta. Recognized for his lifetime of comic achievements in working for peace and justice, O’Neil will be part of a weekend program celebrating comics on December 7-8, 2018.

O’Neil will be the central figure in the Library’s “Comic Books and Social Justice” weekend. His events begin on Friday, December 7 at 7 PM with “Dennis O’Neil and Beyond: Bringing Changes Through Comics.” The comics he wrote in the early 1970s explored major issues of the period, including racism, poverty, and drug addiction, among others. He’ll be joined by Christopher Priest (Black Panther, Deathstroke), artist Christopher Herndon (Star Trek), and others to discuss how comics have changed our lives and will continue to do so.

“Family Day: Comics Chat and Marketplace” will be held on Saturday, December 8 at 11 AM. Christopher Herndon, Paul Jenkins, Christopher Priest, Darren Vincenzo, and other comic creators will talk about their work, factors that led to their careers, and how they use their talents to fight for justice, following in O’Neil’s footsteps. Select books and merchandise will be for sale and there will be a limited signing period with creators.

Then on Saturday at 1 PM, in “Dennis O’Neil on Batman and More,” O’Neil will talk about his life, how he got into comics, bringing Batman back to his gothic roots, and his time working at DC and Marvel.

“We are looking forward to partnering with the Hero Initiative to celebrate Denny and his legacy as an advocate for social justice with a weekend full of exciting events,” Dr. Meredith Evans, Director of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, said.
