Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be the next creative team to take viewers to a galaxy far, far away. Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger confirmed at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit that the pair will be helming the next Star Wars film after the release of The Rise of Skywalker.

“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” Iger said. “And we’re not saying anything more about that.”

The film isn’t set for any sort of release until 2022 – three years after The Rise of Skywalker premieres.

“The conclusion that we reached was that three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to really gear up for the next film’s release,” Iger said about the release schedule.

Currently, two Star Wars shows are in production for Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+, and the company has also previously announced that director Rian Johnson would also be doing a trilogy at some point.
