Fresh off their record setting sale of the Boba Fett L-slot prototype for $112,926, Hake’s Auctions has announced the consignment of a rocket-firing Boba Fett J-slot for their November 2019 auction. This extremely rare figure is a Tomart & Kellerman example that has been examined by the Collectible Investment Brokerage and graded AFA 85+.

The rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype is one of the scarcest and most sought after Star Wars toys. It was originally displayed at the New York Toy Fair in 1979, but never went into mass production due to issues and concerns surrounding the toy’s rocket-firing capabilities. This has left a small number in the collecting community which are coveted by the most serious collectors.

The rocket-firing prototype is described as L-slot or J-slot, referencing the shape of the firing mechanism on the figure’s back. The L-slot is the more commonly seen version (resembles a backward “L”), but quality issues because there wasn’t a tab to secure the mechanism when not firing. The J-slot design (shaped like a “J”) features a small catch to set the mechanism in a resting position when not in use.

It is estimated that there are around 20 J-slots in collectors’ hands, compared to an estimated 80 L-slots. Of further note, this figure that’ll be sold at Hake’s features paint detailing whereas the majority of L-slots are unpainted.

“Offering the Russell Branton collection – and other pieces that have come our way because of it – has been nothing short of amazing. Growing up a Star Wars fan, and being there from the initial release in 1977, seeing where prices have gone over time, particularly that last few years, is truly astounding,” Hake’s President Alex Winter said. “The collecting world is fully embracing and strongly pursuing high grade pieces and key rarities. That leads us nicely into our announcement for what is certain to be the next record setter – this J-slot rocket-firing Boba Fett.”

More details on this exciting addition to Hake’s Auction #228 will be presented on their website, as well as on Facebook and Instagram.

Hake’s Consignment Manager Kelly McClain is attending Comic-Con International: San Diego this weekend on July 18-21 and will discuss the prototype and consignment opportunities at booth #2401.
