A new Battlestar Galactica show from Mr. Robot executive producer Sam Esmail is joining NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service. Launching in April 2020, Peacock will feature original content, movies, and reboots from the NBCU library. Rather than a reboot of the sci-fi classic, the new Battlestar Galactica show will stay “true to the spirit” of the 2000s-era show.

BSG fans, this will not be a remake of the amazing series Ronald D. Moore launched because... why mess with perfection?” Esmail tweeted. “Instead, we’ll explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar. So say we all!”

The original Battlestar Galactica series ran for just one season on ABC before spawning a short-lived sequel and several comic book adaptations. Moore revived the franchise in 2003 with a three-hour Sci-Fi Channel miniseries, produced by Universal TV.

A critical success, this Battlestar Galactica lasted four seasons and helped the franchise reach cult status. Since the conclusion of Moore’s Battlestar Galactica in 2009, two spinoff series – the prequel Caprica and Blood & Chrome – were launched.

Esmail currently executive produces Mr. Robot, which he created, the anthology Briarpatch and Amazon’s Homecoming. He is currently developing a limited series based on Fritz Lang’s 1927 novel Metropolis and a limited series about the LA billboard diva Angelyne starring his wife Emmy Rossum.

NBCU’s Peacock will launch in early 2020 with more than 15,000 hours of content.
