Metropolis Gallery’s new J. Scott Campbell exhibit – which opens during New York Comic Con 2019 – offers comic art fans and collectors the opportunity to not only view and purchase the work of one of the industry’s most captivating artists but chat with him at the opening reception.

The gallery reception will be held Friday, October 4 from 6 PM to 9 PM and is open to the public. More than 120 pieces of original art – valued at $750,000 in total – will be on display. The show runs until January 31, 2020.

Campbell is best known for his landmark series Danger Girl and his work on titles such as Gen 13, Amazing Spider-Man, and Black Cat. He is also known for his Marvel exclusive variant covers and FairyTale Fantasies pin-up art, which includes a line of Sideshow collectible statues.

“Scott’s work has such a distinctive line,” said Metropolis Gallery curator and owner Vincent Zurzolo. “His heroes and heroines are incredibly eye-catching and beyond dynamic. Every time you see one of his covers, you immediately know it’s his.”

Campbell began working as a commercial artist shortly after graduating high school. Even as a teenager, he collected comics on the basis of their artwork – not their titles – which set him apart from other comic book fans. His Metropolis exhibit will include wide-ranging artwork featuring Spider-Man, Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy, Black Cat, X-Men, Batman, Danger Girl, Fantastic Four, Spawn, Spider-Gwen, Conan, Wolverine, Venom, Captain Marvel, and more.

“Various pieces are priced from $350-$55,000,” Zurzolo said. “So there is something for collectors at every level. We’ve had clients begging to scoop up certain pieces before the exhibit even opens, so we expect this to be one of our busiest shows.”

After opening night, the exhibit will run Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 AM to 5 PM until the show closes on January 31, 2020. As always, the gallery’s permanent rotating exhibit also will be available for viewing. Metropolis Gallery is located at 36 West 37th Street, 6th Floor, a 10-minute stroll from the Javits Center where New York Comic Con is held.

Metropolis Gallery is the creation of vintage comic collectibles dealer Metropolis Collectibles. Together with its online auction house, ComicConnect.com, it has an evolving inventory of more than 150,000 collectibles and holds five Guinness World Records.
