Hello Kitty, the cute white cat with the red bow on her head, is celebrating her 50th birthday as a pop culture icon. To celebrate the milestone, Hello Kitty and Sanrio (the Japanese company behind the character) are partnering with BoxLunch on 28 floral-themed items.

BoxLunch will offer apparel like t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and pants, along with purses, jewelry, and home décor items. Hello Kitty will be featured alongside other Sanrio characters like Kuromi, My Melody, and Pochacco. All of the characters will appear together on the Sanrio Hello Kitty and friends floral character hoodie.

Hello Kitty came about when Sanrio’s founder, Shintaro Tsuji, noted that the merchandise he was selling (rubber sandals in particular) moved more product when “cute” designs were added. He hired cartoonists to design characters for his merchandise, and Yuko Shimizu came up with the cat. Hello Kitty helped the Sanrio company in a massive way increasing their sales seven times over the four years following the first release of a Hello Kitty product.

She debuted on a vinyl coin purse in Japan in 1974, and has since become a cultural icon around the world. A universal symbol of harmless, lighthearted cuteness, Hello Kitty can be found on clothing, jewelry, and even in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as a massive balloon.

The BoxLunch line is one of several celebrating Hello Kitty’s 50th anniversary. McDonald’s will have Sanrio inspired Happy Meal toys and Bandai will offer Tamagotchi Uni and Nano Hello Kitty toys.

The BoxLunch Hello Kitty line will go live on April 15, 2024.
