How did the Transformers become, well, the Transformers? Paramount Pictures’ first trailer for Transformers One, starts to answer that question.

Transformers One is an origin story about the friendship between Optimus Prime and Megatron before they became enemies and leaders of the Autobots and Decepticons. Set on the Transformers’ home of Cybertron, it starts when Optimus Prime (then called Orion Pax) and Megatron (known as D-16) were “lowly worker bots who can’t even transform.”

Their desire to become more than meets the eye takes them to the surface of their planet and an adventure that heralds the future to come. Plenty of action and humor are teased in the trailer, which gets even more of an energy boost by the Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up.”

The animated film features the voices of Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Scarlett Johansson as Elita, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion, and Steve Buscemi in an undisclosed role.

Transformers One is directed by Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4), based on a script by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Bobby Rubio (Riley’s First Date? short). It arrives in theaters in September 2024.
