Dan Buckley, who has been working as publisher of Marvel, has been promoted to president of Marvel Entertainment. The news was exclusively announced by The Hollywood Reporter, which reported that he’ll oversee all of Marvel except the movie division, which is run by Kevin Feige.

Buckley will continue reporting to CEO Ike Perlmutter, who he has worked with to improve Marvel’s profits and visibility while being savvy about the direct market and retailing. He’ll add games, global brand management, licensing, and merchandising to his workload.

Well known in the comic community, Buckley is a big part of why Marvel has been so successful year after year. He started at Marvel in the international licensing division and became vice-president of marketing services in the 1990s. He left for a period to work with the marketing agency Omnicom Group, then came back to Marvel where he served as publisher since 2003.

Overseeing animation and digital, under him Marvel has had successful annual events that connected their line of titles, including Civil War and Secret Wars. They have also had reboots and rebrands, and introduced more ethnic and gender diversity to their slate of characters and books. He improved their online presence, launching the Marvel Unlimited digital subscription service. Buckley also collaborated with producer Jeph Loeb to push for more TV content which led to Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage as well as animated programming featuring Marvel heroes like the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
