There are plenty of major superhero teams in comic books these days, but perhaps one of the best-known superhero teams ever is the Justice League of America. The JLA was built out of the idea of the Justice Society of America, which debuted in 1941 in All Star Comics #3.

The original Justice Society consisted of Doctor Fate, Hour-Man, The Spectre, The Sandman, The Atom, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman. The team appeared consistently in All Star Comics and expanded to include the likes of Wonder Woman among others. By the early 1950s, though, the JSA was gone – and the Justice League arrived to take its place in The Brave and the Bold #28 in March 1960.

The JLA contained many of the Silver Age versions of characters that originally appeared in the JSA; the seven original members were Batman, Superman, Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman. Other significant heroes who have been included in the Justice League lineup have included Cyborg, The Atom, Shazam, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Hawkman, and many others.

Interestingly enough, while Batman and Superman were easily the biggest names of the time when the JLA first premiered, the two heroes rarely featured into most of the team’s stories and hardly ever appeared on the covers. The JLA has been reshaped a number of times over the years, and other Justice Leagues were later established, such as Justice League Europe and Justice League International.

Justice League fans have several lots that may interest them in the current auction going on at Hake’s Americana & Collectibles. JLA lots include a Justice League of America – Wonder Woman board game, which contains game cards that feature each JLA member; a Justice League of America – Aquaman board game, which features playing spaces in the shape of the letter “A” and great box graphics of Aquaman fighting a giant octopus; and a Justice League of America – The Flash game, which features scenes of JLA members fighting a number of their deadly foes.

Hake’s also has a Justice League of America Tattoo Gum Fleer full display box from 1970, which predominantly features Superman and Batman on the lid and sizes. Other heroes shown include Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow. There are 120 unopened packs included with the box, which feature waxed paper wrappers around a single piece of gum with a tattoo sheet. A full box such as this is incredibly rare.

Those who prefer the Golden Age versions of these characters from their time in the Justice Society can take a look at two buttons – one for The Flash and one for Wonder Woman. The buttons were offered to comic readers in 1942 who filled out a reader’s survey coupon, and both examples still display with bright and vivid colors. With auctions closing on March 14-16, 2017, interested parties should get their bids in soon.
