Quantcast

DC; September 1978
Cover by Mike Grell

Title: “The Third Identity of Replikon!”
Synopsis:
An alien imitating the powers of several superheroes comes to Earth, where it does battle with Green Lantern and company.

Writer: Denny O’Neil
Penciler:
Mike Grell
Inker:
Bruce Patterson

Review: Obviously, Denny O’Neil wrote some great stories for Green Lantern; this isn’t one of them. Replikon is a silly, simple foe, and coincidence seems to be the engine that powers this story. Mike Grell delivers his usual strong pencils, but, surprisingly, Bruce Patterson’s inks aren’t an improvement over Vince Colletta’s.

Title: “The Champion of the Green Flame”
Synopsis:
The original Green Lantern worries his ring might be defective – or is a Chinese tong to blame?

Writer: Cary Burkett
Penciler: Mike Vosburg
Inker:
Bob Smith

Review: Cary Burkett has a nice feel for Earth-2 characters, while Bob Smith’s inks work well over Mike Vosburg’s pencils.

Grade (for the whole issue): B-

Cool factor: The backup story serial has potential, with Bob Smith making Mike Vosburg’s work resemble like vintage Joe Staton.

Character quotable: “Punk rockers, huh? Well, you’ve got the punk part down pat!” – Green Arrow, hip as ever
