Quantcast

Bidding has ended and Hake’s Americana & Collectibles closed another $1 million auction. Featured among the lots were several collections and groups of popular TV shows, film series, characters, and toy lines. Among the exciting, notable sales were several Mego figures.

The 1979 Mego Aquaman on dark purple card finished in the top five sales that closed on Thursday. Bidding bounced back and forth several times before reaching $6,590, exceeding the $200 to $400 estimate by a wide margin.

The 8” tall poseable figure with polyester suit came with the original punched blister card. The blister is firmly attached on all sides and was given the Near Mint grade for the Type 2 figure.

The Aquaman figure was first issued in 1972-1973 in a very rare solid box, along with Batman, Robin, and Superman. Then he was issued in five different window boxed versions before the purple card figure was made. The later carded versions like this are harder to find and therefore can reach higher prices.

“Vintage Mego’s continue to be of particular interest to collectors and with several companies now producing reproductions for collectors and other Mego-like figures being popular from companies like Diamond Direct who are doing Marvel figures and Figures Toy Company doing DC and other properties, these types of figures look like they will remain popular for years to come,” Hake’s Production Manager Todd Sheffer said.

The Mego Conan on card sold for $1,834, over the $700 to $1,000 estimate. This 8” poseable figure on blister card is a rare 1979 version. The blister is still attached and he comes with the caramel colored loincloth and clear band on his hair.

Hake’s sold the Mego Green Arrow on rare red 1979 card for $1,363. This figure with polyester outfit, hat, bow, and quiver was part of a line of four heroes issued on generic card with no item numbers. Though the figure has typical graying of the head, it is still in Near Mint condition.

The Mego Batgirl on rare red 1979 card realized $1,265. Also one of the four heroes issued on the generic red cards with no item number, this figure was graded as Near Mint. She comes with polyester outfit with cape, removable cowl, gloves, books, utility belt, and purse.

Rounding out the top five Mego figures was the Captain America on card, which brought $920. The 8” figure has pink facial paint and comes with the cloth star and the shield with no aging, is still in place.

All prices realized include the 15% buyer’s premium.
