On Tuesday, February 21, 2017, Hake’s Americana & Collectibles opened Auction #220. With historical and political memorabilia, cowboy to space toys, Disneyana, autographs, a variety of posters, character watches, baseball items, and original comic art, there’s something for every collector.
Among the plethora of collectibles are 1,100 comic books. From third party graded to unslabbed, they have interesting finds, signed copies, Golden Age titles, as well as keys and first appearances.
One that is sure to draw attention is Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC .5 with the first appearance of Spider-Man in lot 1298. This title is among the most sought after first appearances and is signed on the front cover by Stan Lee. Along with Spider-Man, a/k/a Peter Parker, it also introduces Aunt May and Uncle Ben.
Lot 1300 houses Amazing Spider-Man #14 CGC 7.5 featuring the first Green Goblin (Norman Osborn). It has the first appearance of the Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man, with Stan Lee story, and Steve Ditko cover and art.
Spidey is also represented in Amazing Spider-Man #129 CGC 9.0 in lot 1314. The vigilante Punisher (Frank Castle) makes his first appearance as does the villain, the Jackal. This issue has a story by Gerry Conway, with cover by Gil Kane and John Romita.
Lot 1246 has Batman Adventures #12 CGC 9.0 with the first comic book appearance of Harley Quinn. The popular character has made this issue a Modern Age classic. It has a story by Kelley Puckett with cover and art by Mike Parobek and Rick Burchett.
Daredevil #1 CGC 5.0 with the first appearance of Daredevil (Matt Murdock) is in lot 1334. In addition to the Man Without Fear, this issue introduces Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. It was written by Stan Lee with cover and art by Jack Kirby and Bill Everett.
Fantastic Four #48 CGC 8.5 with the first appearances of the Silver Surfer and Galactus is in lot 1345. The Inhumans and Watcher also appear in this issue by Stan Lee with Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott cover and art.
Lot 1266 features Hawkman #1 CBCS 9.2, the first solo Hawkman title. This issue also has Hawkgirl, Chief Andar Pul, and Commissioner George Emmett. It was written by Gardner Fox, with cover and art by Murphy Anderson.
Hulk smashes into lot 1353 in The Incredible Hulk #181 CGC 7.0 with the first appearances of Wolverine. The popular Bronze Age issue also includes Wendigo. It was written by Len Wein, with cover by Herb Trimpe and additional art by Trimpe and Jack Abel.
Journey Into Mystery #83 CGC 5.0 with the origin and first appearance of Thor is in lot 1362. The key Silver Age book was written by Stan Lee, with cover and art by Jack Kirby and additional art by Steve Ditko.
Lot 1284 has Swamp Thing #1 CGC 8.5 with the origin of Swamp Thing, and first appearances of Lt. Matt Cable and Alec and Linda Holland. It features a story by Len Wein with cover and art by Bernie Wrightson.
Zombies take a bite out of lot 1441 with The Walking Dead #1 CGC 9.2. The series debut includes the first appearances of Rick Grimes, Shane Walsh, and Morgan and Duane Jones. The very popular Modern title was written by Robert Kirkman, with cover and art by Tony Moore.
Lot 1406 houses X-Men #1 CGC 3.5 Restored with the first appearances of the X-Men and Magneto. Their origin is told, as well as introducing Professor X, Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast, and Marvel Girl. It has a Stan Lee story with Jack Kirby cover and art. According to CGC, there is some color touch on the cover, pieces added to the cover, and three edges were trimmed.
