Heritage Auctions’ Vintage Comics & Comic Art Auction, which saw more than 2,800 bidders in person and via HALive, brought in a total of $6.3 million. Leading the charge was a collection of Underground Comix from two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Graham Nash, which realized more than $1.1 million.

“The market for original comic art continues to show its strength – especially for works by Robert Crumb. This is the second auction in a row in which we achieved six-figure selling prices of Robert Crumb’s art for our clients,” said Ed Jaster, Senior Vice President Heritage Auctions.

The biggest highlight from Nash’s collection was Crumb’s 1967 original cover art for ZAP Comix #1 which soared to $525,800. Original art for the People's Comics ended at $203,150. Meanwhile original art for Crumb’s Weirdo #22 brought in $131,450, along with his 1991 ID #2 original cover art that reached $101,575. In addition to these top six-figure lots, Crumb’s original art for Your Hytone Comics’ “Pete the Plumber” story sold for $89,625, while his original art for Mr. Natural #2 reached $77,675.

Fred Ray’s Superman #12 original cover art reached $77,675. This iconic Golden Age cover features Superman showing his support for the U.S. military, appearing with members of the Navy and Army. It was the first time U.S. service members were depicted on the cover of a Superman comic.
