Discussions and arguments will always be had about which superhero is most powerful, most heroic, or most interesting. But from a collecting standpoint, only a few are at the top of the heap when it comes to feverish interest from comic book collectors.

Superman ‒ the Man of Steel, the Last Son of Krypton – is always popular with collectors. Now fans have the opportunity to bring home a copy of Action Comics #7 CGC 4.0, depicting Superman’s second cover appearance, through the current auction at Hake’s Americana & Collectibles.

This issue houses stories by Jerry Siegel and Fred Guardineer, featuring a cover and art by Joe Shuster with additional art by Guardineer and Bernard Baily. Published in December 1938, it’s one of the biggest key Golden Age comics and one of the most sought-after Superman-related issues.

What makes this collecting opportunity even more exciting is its rarity in regard to the grade. The CGC Census lists only 27 copies with the Universal (blue label) ‒ this copy among them ‒ and 45 total graded copies.

“In cataloging this comic for the auction, we were stunned to find out there are less copies of this in the CGC Census than Action Comics #1,” Hake’s President Alex Winter said. “That alone speaks volumes as to the rarity of this issue. While Action Comics #1 will always be the more valuable and the true ‘key’ to any Superman comic book collection, the importance of issue 7 also can’t be understated. It is a Golden Age must have for sure.”

In addition to its rarity, this copy has never changed hands before. It comes from a newly discovered Golden Age comic collection from the original owner who purchased them off the rack in the ’30s and ’40s.
