Clarke Auction Gallery will offer a wide-ranging auction on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 10 AM, running the gamut from Chinese carved furniture to Daum Nancy and Galle vases but fine art will definitely take center stage. 

Crossing the block early in the sale is an important oil on canvas painting by Gustave Jean Jacquet (French, 1846-1909), circa 1869-70, “Normande Young Girl Holding Chalice,” 39-1/2 by 28 inches, ($8,000-12,000) from a Connecticut estate. Other fine paintings on offer include a playful David Burliuk (Russian, 1882-1967) oil on board painting, “The Man With 13 Pipes,” 12 by 9 inches ($1,000-1,500) and a colorful Itzchak Tarkay acrylic on canvas, “Women at a Cafe,” 39-3/4 by 52 inches ($4,000-6,000).

“We do not run themed auctions. Everything is fresh to market and each sale ranges from fine art and midcentury modern to jewelry and decorative arts,” said owner and auctioneer Ronan Clarke. “We do have a strong concentration of fine art in this auction, however, with important sculptures by Dorothy Dehner and Cesare Lapini as well as an ancient marble torso.” 

The late American sculptor Dorothy Dehner (1901-1994) is best known for her Constructivist-like sculptures that focus on line and contours and have more of an assembled appearance instead of a modeled look. Two of her abstract steel sculptures from 1987 are represented in this sale, each estimated at $10,000-15,000. One measures 34-1/4 by 28-1/2 by 75 inches and the other is 82-1/2 by 14 by 52 inches.

Another important sculpture is from Cesare Lapini (Italy, 1848-1893), a signed marble work of a woman, inscribed “Odalisca,” which stands 53-1/2 inches tall ($6-9,000). Besides contemporary sculpture, there are also ancient pieces here such as the marble torso of a woman’s body in as found condition (head is missing), estimated at $4,000-6,000. An expected top performer in the sale is a Tiffany Studios signed Tulip table lamp having a 16-inch shade ($10,000-15,000).

Sourced from a Long Island estate is a collection of about 50 bronzes, including choice examples by Isadore Jules Bonheur; an equal number of vases and decorative pieces of Daum Nancy and Galle along with KPM porcelain plaques and Chinese carved tables. Among the Bonheur works are a signed bronze sculpture of a horse and jockey ($2,000-3,000) and a lot of two signed bronzes ($1-1,500) of figures on horseback.

A handful of fine KPM signed porcelain plaques from the estate includes a nude grouping with animals, 12 by 9-3/4 inches ($4,000-6,000) and one of a beauty holding a plate of fruit, 9 by 6-1/4 inches ($1,5-2,500). 

French cameo glass is a perennial auction favorite here and from the Long Island estate comes several signed Galle cameo glass vases: one possibly depicting Lake Como, 11 inches tall ($2,000-3,000); one in varying shades of orange with berries, 18-1/2 inches tall ($1,000-1,500) and one depicting a mountain landscape in a buttery yellow hue over blue mountains, 10 inches tall ($1,000-1,500). Daum Nancy cameo glass on offer includes a signed chandelier having a 15-3/4-inch diameter ($1,500-2,500) and a vase of a landscape against a white background, 14 inches tall ($1,500-2,000).

Carved Chinese furniture offerings include a pair of foliate square Chinese marble top tables ($800-1,000), a marble top center table having a foliate form marble surrounded by carved and stylized lotus petals ($600-900), both from the Long Island estate. From another consignor comes a carved and lacquered hardwood incense table with a foliate form top over a narrow waist (1/1,500).

Headlining the silver category are several lots of coin silver wares by S. Kirk & Son, including a pair of ewers with heavy repousse decoration of churches and castles with figures amid a floral background and ram’s heads on the handles ($4,000-6,000), early to mid Nineteenth Century, nearly 16 inches tall; as well as a four-piece tea service with tea pot, coffee pot, kettle and creamer, all bearing heavy floral repousse decoration ($2,000-3,000).

Jewelry will also figure prominently in the auction, including a trifecta of emerald and diamond lots: a platinum, emerald, and diamond bracelet comprising ten marquis cut emeralds flanked by 12 bow form pendants having central marquis cut diamonds ($5,000-7,000); a Continental 18K gold, emerald, diamond, enamel and pearl bracelet, Mughal-influenced, centered with a 8mm Tahitian black pearl ($3,000-5,000) and a 3.81-carat emerald and diamond cocktail ring in 14K yellow gold ($2,500-3,500).

Midcentury Modern will make an appearance in the sale with a Bakalowits & Sohne “Miracle” Sputnik chandelier, 16 by 25 inches ($3,000-5,000); a mohair upholstered settee, signed George Brickel ($2,000-3,000) and a pair of signed Brickel mohair upholstered club chairs ($1,000-1,500). Rounding out the auction are a lot comprising several Egyptian artifacts to include an Ushabti, all encased in a custom shadow box, figures ranging from 1 inch to 5 inches ($2-3,000) and a famille verte plum blossom bowl with the interior and exterior enameled in a deep apple green with plum blossoms, interior with dragon medallion ($1,000-1,500).
