The Punisher has seen his fair share of enemies and other unsavory types cross his path over the years, and one of them celebrates his 10th anniversary this year: Barracuda. Created by Garth Ennis and Goran Pavlov, he first appeared in May 2006, and though he was originally scheduled to die in that story, an editor told them to keep him around.

According to his backstory, Barracuda grew up in Boca Raton, Florida, as the son of an abusive alcoholic. After his father abandoned the family, he had to care for his siblings; he eventually joined the Army and became a Green Beret, though he was anything but an honorable soldier, and his team eventually went AWOL in Nicaragua. He became a notorious gangster after that, and eventually partnered with Harry Ebbing, who had hired him to assassinate the Punisher.

Barracuda’s encounter with the Punisher went less than ideally, as he lost an eye and the fingers on his right hand during the fight. That said, he comes out victorious, though he wanted to watch the Punisher be fed to sharks instead of killing him when he got the chance, and so the Punisher managed to walk away from the fight.

Barracuda got his own miniseries after that – The Punisher Presents: Barracuda – in which he pairs with an Italian Mafia boss for a drug deal, only to betray him later. He works with the boss’ son, Oswald, a hemophiliac; Barracuda comes to display genuine concern for Oswald, who he encourages to become more outgoing, and goes so far as to risk his own life to protect Oswald.

Eventually, he was killed by the Punisher, though he did make appearances in future comics via flashbacks that primarily focused on his time in South America. He’s also appeared in various parallel universes, including Punisher Noir, where he’s one of Bumpy Johnson’s enforcers, and Space: Punisher, where he shows up as an extraterrestrial drug dealer. He also appeared in The Punisher: No Mercy video game in 2009.
