The Sons of Champlin were an American rock band formed in the late 1960s, featuring frontman Bill Champlin. Unlike San Francisco’s more psychedelic bands – like Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, and Moby Grape – The Sons included more refined arrangements and themes intended to make audiences think.

On April 17-18, 1970, The Sons performed alongside Elvin Bishop and Stone Ground during a concert at the University of San Diego. San Andreas Fault – a popular San Francisco-based printer – produced a poster for this concert which is now a highly sought after collectible, largely because the poster provides crossover appeal to both collectors of concert posters and comic collectors.

The iconic poster announces details for the then upcoming concert, along with a larger than life image of the Incredible Hulk. During this period of the 1960s, Marvel Comic characters were riding a wave of popularity known as Marvelmania. The imagery, which was provided by Tad Hunter, pays homage to Hulk pencilers Herb Trimpe and John Severin. Both Trimpe and Severin did extensive work as penciler and inker, respectively, on the comic series The Incredible Hulk.

If you’re an avid collector you are no doubt familiar with this poster, but did you know you have the chance to bring it home? That’s right, Hake’s Americana & Collectibles Auction #220 is open for bidding!

Featured in lot 1993 is a rare example of this exceptional poster. The 13” x 16-3/4” poster is printed on a lightly coated medium index stock, includes a logo for San Andreas Fault, and has “Incredible Hulk © Marvel Comics Group – Homage To Herb Trimpe And John Severin,” printed on the bottom.
