In 1954, D. David Abrams and Madeline Abrams founded the toy company the Mego Corporation. During the late 1950s into the early 1960s, Mego thrived as a purveyor of dime store toys. Following the rising cost of newspaper advertising in 1971, Mego’s new president shifted the company toward producing action figures with interchangeable bodies instead. By 1972, Mego had secured the licenses to create toys for both National Periodical Publications, as DC Comics was then known, and Marvel Comics.

The company’s popular line of 8” figures, dubbed “The World’s Greatest Super Heroes,” created the standard action figure scale for the 1970s. Mego went on to acquire the license rights for various motion pictures, television programs, and comic books. Eventually, the company produced action figure lines for Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, the Wizard of Oz, and Tarzan. The Planet of the Apes and Star Trek figures were incredibly popular and helped inspire the rise of action figure series based on pop culture franchises.

Although the company became defunct in 1983, today Mego action figures and playsets are highly prized collectibles, with some fetching thousands of dollars in the open collectibles market. Did you know you have the chance to get in on that action?
