In the Limelight

There were plenty of fun off-site attractions at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, but the Blade Runner 2049 Experience took the cake for many attendees. Fans endured a grueling 4-hour wait in line to get inside this exhibit, however there were multiple payoffs at the end. The show started out with a Virtual Reality presentation of an upcoming video game where you found yourself in a Police Spinner in the middle of a Replicant pursuit and ended with a spiraling crash into the city below.

Once they peeled off the VR headsets and stepped back into reality, fans were escorted to a recreation of the crash site, complete with over 30 actors portraying cops, hookers, street people, and bar patrons. Asked if there were any survivors, the cop on duty will tell you that a “skin job” (replicant) managed to escape, but they’re in pursuit. It’s a great way to immerse fans into the Blade Runner world. Just don’t ask the cop for a picture with the Spinner or he’s likely to arrest you for leaving fingerprints on the active crime scene!

The next section featured a large room made up to appear like the streets of Blade Runner’s Los Angeles in the year 2049. It came complete with more actors in character, a noodle bar serving actual noodle dishes, vending machines where you could get photos of scenes from the movie, and a Replicant ID zone in case anyone wanted to see if they were really a human or not. The room also housed many of props from the new movie, including costumes, badges, Deckard’s classic blaster, and the new weapon used by Agent K.

Patrons 21 and older could visit the final room and sip small samples of Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey, the company sponsoring the Blade Runner 2049 Experience.

All in all, the Blade Runner 2049 was an “Experience” fans will never forget.

You can catch the actual movie itself when Blade Runner 2049 opens in theaters October 6, 2017.
