Pokémon Crystal will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS family of systems via the eShop and Virtual Console, according to an announcement made by Nintendo. The game will be available for download starting on January 26, 2018 for a price of $9.99.

The game first released 17 years ago for the Game Boy Color and was an enhanced edition of the Gold and Silver games. Crystal notably added the ability to play as a female character for the first time in the franchise, and also pushed the GBC to its limits by adding animated sprites during Pokémon battles.

The eShop edition of Pokémon Crystal will be compatible with the Pokémon Bank service when it releases; Pokémon Bank is a paid service that lets players bring Pokémon from classic core games to the newest game releases and store them online. This particular Crystal release will also allow players to catch the legendary Pokémon Celebi for the first time – in the original release, Celebi could only be obtained using a special accessory that was exclusive to Japan.

Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver, the original two games from the second generation of the series, released on the eShop in September 2017. It is unknown why the company delayed the release of Crystal.
