Nintendo hosted their indie showcase on March 20, 2019, highlighting a handful of independently-developed games that will be coming to the Switch console by the end of the year.

One of the standouts helped open the brief showcase, which happened to be Cuphead. This game has been one of Microsoft’s most critically-acclaimed exclusive titles, and its arrival on the Switch is largely thanks to “our friends at Microsoft,” according to the announcement. The challenging platformer features an animation style akin to early cartoons from Fleischer and Disney and includes a snappy jazz soundtrack. It hits the Switch on April 18 and can be pre-purchased today.

Double Fine announced their next project, a top-down action title simply called Rad. Featuring a synthwave backbeat and a ‘90s-themed wasteland, the protagonist tries to restore the land while also undergoing various mutations that can help them stave off enemies. Rad arrives in summer 2019.

Blaster Master Zero 2 was not only revealed, it’s available right now. The sequel to 2017’s Blaster Master Zero (which in and of itself was sort of a remake of the original Blaster Master) is a whole new adventure that still sports the pixelated retro aesthetic.

The showcase wrapped up with the surprise announcement of Cadence of Hyrule, a Legend of Zelda-themed title developed by Brace Yourself Games, known for Crypt of the Necrodancer. The gameplay features Link and Zelda as playable characters in this new spinoff, in a style reminiscent of A Link to the Past. This marks the first time Nintendo has collaborated with an indie studio on the Zelda franchise, one of its largest and most storied series.
