After more than a decade of being out of print, Revolutionary Girl Utena is back in a beautiful hardcover box set that collects all five volumes of the original release, plus the manga adaptation of the Adolescence of Utena film. The story follows Utena Tenjou, a young girl who desires to be noble like the prince from her childhood. After witnessing the abusive behavior of her schoolmate Saionji, she challenges him to a duel – and quickly gets wrapped up in the mysterious “dueling game” of Ohtori Academy.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is still cited today as one of the most influential shoujo series ever. The post-modern twist on the classic fairy tale setting of princes and princesses resonated with viewers when the anime series debuted in 1997, and now that the manga is finally back in print after so long, it’s a great time to pick it up. Not only is the presentation of the material absolutely beautiful – with two hardcover books and many full-color pages of Chiho Saito’s gorgeous artwork – but the story is quite timeless. It’s definitely a “manga for people who don’t like manga” just based on the classic storytelling.

Viz absolutely nailed this deluxe rerelease of one of my favorite series ever. I can’t possibly recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena enough.
