Archie Comics; $3.99

Betty ended up suffering the most from the crash that resulted from Archie and Reggie’s ill-advised drag race, and now the Riverdale crew has to face the reality that their friend may be bound to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Her friends are now attempting to pick up the slack around town by helping the various people and organizations that Betty herself assisted with. Archie too wants to pitch in – but due to his natural clumsiness, he fails spectacularly at just about everything.

It’s obviously never been unusual for a popular comic book character to experience a life-altering injury or even death – but for it to happen in the slice of life kind of book that Archie embodies is somewhat out of the ordinary. It will be interesting to see how this event changes the rest of her friends and family, and it seems as though we’ll soon find out what exactly will happen to Reggie. This arc might be the most interesting and best-written issues of Archie so far; emotionally gripping and a page-turner to boot, Archie #23 proves that this is absolutely a series worth reading.
