Ready for another Ash Williams punch in the teeth? The comical-scary story of Ash Williams the substitute teacher comes to an end in Ash vs. The Army of Darkness #5.

The grand architect of the Necronomicon Ex Mortis’ reappearance has been revealed. Director Friedrich has been using SMART for years to accumulate pages of the book so that he can create his own army of Deadites. So, the Homecoming dance is ruined and the kids have been turned into monsters. Ash, Commander Digges, and Joanne must try to stop the Deadites and Friedrich, not to mention a now undead Westlake, without hurting any of the students. Groovy.

This last issue of the story by Chris Sims and Chad Bowers was pretty good. It’s exciting, ridiculous, a bit gross, and funny. Army of Darkness isn’t thought provoking entertainment, but it managed to include a plausible argument for the military villain.

The art by Mauro Vargas and Sam Lotfi and colors by Triona Farrell fit the story well. It’s outrageous and energetic, which is a great fit for Evil Dead. And they get bonus points for including a panel that pays homage to the movie poster.
