Archie; $3.99

With some of Batman’s most dastardly foes having infiltrated Riverdale, the Caped Crusader decides that it’s time to fight back – by sending Robin and Batgirl into Riverdale High undercover as the school’s newest students. Archie and Betty are immediately interested in Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson, respectively, and things look to be off to a good start for the new classmates. But the villains have their own new recruit to fight back, in the form of one Reggie Mantle, who unfortunately is always interested in pulling a prank.

Archie Meets Batman ’66 works so well because the campiness of both of these classic series meshes in a way that makes sense for them. Dan Parent’s artwork captures the vibe of the old school Batman television series and brings those characters into Riverdale in a way that just feels natural. My only gripe with this series is that we’ve had two issues’ worth of exposition and build-up and no real conflict yet – hopefully we get into the good stuff real soon.
