Things get funny and weird in The Shape of Elvira #2 – basically what you’d expect from the Mistress of the Dark.

Elvira has met the crew and her costar, who seems to be a devoted method actor that won’t take off his Gill-Man costume. It’s the first day of filming her new movie, The Heart is a Black Lagoon, but something is off about Gill and Elvira’s intuition for danger gets a significant jolt following the first day’s party.

The Shape of Elvira is an entertaining comedy title with a hint of the spooky. Her voice and sense of humor shine through from the obvious jokes about her ample attributes to subtle nods at the Groundlings improv troupe. In what has become expected of writer David Avallone, there are also some funny nods to other pop culture properties added to the issue. The team of artist Fran Strukan and colorist Maixm Šimic have done a nice job of portraying Elvira and created a disarming, though intimidating Gill-Man.

It was a fun second issue to the miniseries and has put a few questions on the table which should make for an interesting second half to the story.
