Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics will be ending their run at Dark Horse Comics. The news dropped via CBR, where Joss Whedon confirmed that Buffy is leaving Dark Horse completely.

It had already been announced that the current Season 12 arc was the last of the canonical comic, which ends in September. Fans were already speculating about the future of the title considering the season would only last four issues, versus earlier ones that averaged 25-30 issues and up to 40.

This ends a 20-year deal between the title and publisher, which began with tie-in comics when the TV show was still on the air. Early work between Whedon and Dark Horse also included an adaptation of his original Buffy movie script and the futuristic Fray series. Starting in 2007, Dark Horse has followed the show’s seventh season conclusion with Seasons 8-12 comic series as well as miniseries for popular characters like Willow, Spike, and Giles.

For now, comics will still be available at Dark Horse, including the Buffy Season 10 Library Edition Vol. 3 hardcover.

“We made sure that the journey wasn’t continuing. We wanted to give the Dark Horse era some closure,” Whedon told CBR. “I heard about all of this after the fact. It’s like Disney taking Star Wars over to Marvel. All of a sudden, we realize this is happening. So I’m writing this from a position that will leave everybody in a position where you feel some closure.”

This announcement follows news that Firefly, another Whedon creation, moved out of Dark Horse and to BOOM! Studios for new stories. However, there are no immediate plans for more Buffy comics after the title leaves Dark Horse.
