As things began heating up in the comic character collectibles market a few years back, we began wondering, sometimes aloud, why there wasn't a one-stop-shopping kind of source for news about industry events, auction results, the latest books and the vast history of the medium with which to put all the great new stuff in context. And then we wondered about it some more.

Then, as the need for such a publication became increasingly obvious, it became equally clear that for us to be able to read this type of information we were going to have to put it together ourselves. And hey, that's fine, because it's what we do day in and day out.

On June 14, 2002, the first teaser e-mail for Scoop went out to about 700 our of industry contacts. And some friends. And some family members. (Anything to get the numbers up, right?)

Those who received our "Have We Met?" email got the following message:

...Because in 7 days, you will be among the first to receive The Scoop, the most comprehensive source of information for collectors and pop culture enthusiasts of all ages from Diamond International Galleries and Gemstone Publishing, Inc. Our purpose is to scoop all the relevant news from the worlds of collecting and entertainment to present it to you in our expertly engaging style. We will highlight those past trends that have impacted history and thus, our development as a society. We'll fill you in on the latest shows, cons and auctions as well as the biggest news in pricing. We'll also serve to inform you of events and important trends that are currently having an effect on the industry. Issues of historical interest, such as comic character collectibles, will be combined with up-to-the-minute happenings in a way that welcomes you to contribute and learn.

This week's Scoop, cover dated June 11, 2004, is our 100th issue. And while our goal is still the same, some things have definitely changed:

We now have 43,885 readers and have grown by 10% each of the past few months.

Our first year we took off for Comic-Con International: San Diego and Wizard World Chicago; now we send you almost-live pictures from those shows.

Many readers have commented that they bookmark our page or save the e-mail and read it throughout the week, particularly with specific auctions or events such as conventions coming up.

Additionally, many of the great auction houses, premiere retailers, top creators and even our fellow fans have gone out of the way to tell us how much they enjoy Scoop, and we're happy to share some of their kind comments with you:

I look forward to getting my Scoop email every week because it gives me a chance to catch up on most "hobby-happenings" quickly, without having to gather up all my subscription magazines. More than once Scoop has saved me from missing an auction item wanted by alerting me to the approaching end date. I also like to learn more about the history of our great hobby by reading the articles about the earliest characters and artists, such as the Brownies, Yellow Kid, R.F. Outcault, etc. Keep it comin' guys (and gals). I love Ya!

Scoop has been instrumental in keeping us up to date on what's going on in our hobby and industry, on a weekly basis, in a virtual way! No articles to clip and file but simply move everything over to the Scoop folder! How easy and pleasurable to get all that information and have it constantly on hand. Here's to another 100!
Nadia Mannarino

Scoop is breezy and informative. It's convenient format allows anything from a quick read to an in-depth study. Scoop always has a very interesting assortment of features, news and profiles and I look at it every week.

100 issues already? Wow, time sure flies when you're reading great internet collectible news! All kidding aside, I remember when Tom Gordon first started calling us at CGC for some inside info, which comics had been newly graded, or just current CGC news. At the beginning, I would only check scoop to see if that information was correct, after a few issues, I started reading one or two non-CGC articles and now I am so addicted, I have to read every article in every issue of Scoop. So, hats off to Tom and the gang at Scoop for giving me and the entire collecting community wonderful, entertaining and informative reading every week!

I think Scoop is so great because it's timely, all-inclusive, free, and it just shows up every Friday! It's the best source of information in the hobby! Keep it going!

Scoop always finds the news collectors want to read about, and usually before anyone else publishes it. I would never skip a single issue of Scoop!
Jim Halperin
Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers

Scoop is one of my main sources for getting news about the comic book world. Every Friday I eagerly await my Scoop email. What makes it truly great is the myriad number of topics it touches upon rather than just new comics or just Golden Age. Great job John, JC, Tom and Stacia. Long live Scoop!
Vincent Zurzolo
Metropolis Collectibles, Inc.

Scoop pleases my inner geek-where else can you get comics, toys, trading cards, celebrity birthdays, Bazooka Joe, and Elvis under one roof? Nobody does it better.
Ross Richie
Atomeka Press

Scoop provides me with a connection to areas of collecting that I find very interesting, but for which I have little to no day to day contact. At the same time, I am kept up to date on events of directly related fields. It is the only publication that I am aware of that covers the full spectrum of hobbies and collectibles.

There's a reason it's called the " Scoop " - these guys are on the inside. It's a great place to get real info, not rumor or speculation.
Mike Avon Oeming
Writer, Thor
Artist, Powers

Every Friday afternoon, before I even log onto the Drudge Report for all national and worldly news, I go right to Scoop to read the most up-to-date, thought out and detailed analysis on all things new to comics and pop culture in context. Scoop not only gets the new stuff right, they're the absolute prime source for what's gone before in pop culture history.

Scoop is the best website of its type. It is informative, positive and promotes all types of collecting.

Scoop has that chewy goodness you expect from a comics news source, but it's also got a delightful nutty center.

Scoop should be renamed to "Steam Shovel." That's because you don't just get a scoop of info and news, you get a huge shovel full.
Beau Smith

Scoop is a time machine - not one that travels into the past or the future - it is a time machine that compresses the entire history, present and future of pop entertainment, film, radio, pulps, comics, magazines, toys, books and internet gems into one amazing NOW of entertainment. I love it!

I love Scoop--it's free, it's quick, and it's very informative. Online information is the way to go, and Scoop always does a great job staying right on top of the hottest news in the hobby. Congratulations on #100!

The Friday arrival of Scoop is the pop culture junkie's equivalent of Happy Hour -- a welcomed dose of "feel good" that's the perfect end to the workweek. I look forward to each and every info-filled installment, and I'm obviously not alone ... 43,885 Scoop readers can't be wrong! Congratulations on your 100th issue!

The reason Scoop works so well for me is the Headline News kind of format. I have a very busy schedule and I can't always keep up with everything. I appreciate that I can scan the "headlines" and then go for more detail on the stuff that appeals to me in the moment. What's more, I like the fact that by covering all facets of comics and collectibles and even film - again in that headline format - I am often drawn to a subject I might normally remain ignorant of. As we move more and more to multi-media crossover, it's vital to have a weapon like Scoop in your arsenal.
Robert Tinnell

Co-Writer, The Black Forest

Scoop is a terrific way to keep up with the broadest range of comics and comics-related interests - from business and auctions to mainstream news and creator interviews. An excellent, diverse and fun roundup of the week's news from the main distribution point of comics. And just concise enough not to clog my e-mailbox.
Steve Conley
Creator, Astounding Space Thrills

Scoop is an internet version of the Wall Street Journal for collectibles. It takes the weekly pulse of the collectible market and puts it into an easy-to-read format.

My favorite thing about Scoop is the coverage of the old Disney merchandise. Often it's the first time I've even seen the items.
Frank Cammuso
Creator, Max Hamm, Fairy Tale Detective

The thing that I like the most about Scoop is that it broadens my collecting perspective to all things comic related and even to broader fantasy/sci-fi/collectible occurrences. I love to see the "This Week on eBay" feature as well as the different articles on different areas of collectability. Looking forward to the next 100 issues!

Why is Scoop cool? It's not! Why not? Because my head aches from all the TV, toy, and lunch box trivia, that keeps me up at night! My eyes water knowing I threw out my 1960's vintage Batman lunchbox! My heart pounds from hearing about classic comic strips creators, and-- hey! What's this? I found my lunchbox! Hurray! Scoop is cool, after all-- I'm so happy! Thanks, Scoop!

When it comes to Scoop,

Summer is here, and I have no fear
